Cath Brophy works with mixed-media, creating large-scale drawings on paper. Her recent installations explore the experience of constructed space evoked by our everyday interaction with architecture, referencing its scale and formal components. Cath’s working process – which involves making and unmaking, collaging and reconstructing sections of the composition – disrupts the representational elements of these familiar motifs, creating a disrupted illusion of space and new interpretations of the subject matter.
Born in Brisbane Australia, Cath has traveled extensively, completing her Visual Arts education in England and Australia. She pursued her postgraduate studies in Sydney at the National Arts School, receiving her MFA in Drawing in 2009, where she subsequently worked as a sessional lecturer. She works in Sydney, Hong Kong and – most recently – in Zurich.
Cath has showcased her most recent work in exhibitions in Hong Kong and Taiwan: during Hong Kong’s annual Fotan Open Studios (2013-14) and at Taipei Artists’ Village (2013). Other recent solo exhibitions include Drawing Installation at Doggett Street Studios, Brisbane Australia (2010) and Cupola at Jenny Port Gallery, Melbourne Australia (2010), as part of RMIT’s Drawing Out Festival of Drawing.
Cath has exhibited in mainland China, as part of the exhibition New Era at F518 Artbase Shenzhen (2012) and participated in other group shows, including Overlay with Iakovos Amperidis at Tin Sheds Gallery, Sydney Australia (2012); Project: Art Journal at made.Creative Space, Toowoomba Australia (2011-12) and Block, a collaborative drawing installation with Jennifer O’Brien (2011) at Chrissie Cotter Gallery, Sydney and others.
The artist was a finalist in the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (2010), Grafton Regional Gallery Grafton, Australia and was included in the JADA Touring Exhibition (2010-12). Her work has also been included in The Drawing Center’s New York Viewing Program‘s on-line resource since 2010 http://www.drawingcenter.org/viewingprogram/
